I’ve always done funny little drawings since I was a kid, mainly to entertain myself. When I started hiking, especially the PCT, I began writing a journal of my adventures. Friends and co-workers found these “stories” comical so I began drawing some of these humorous situations. I soon found that just about every hiker I knew could relate.
Since 2003. I section hiked the PCT over a 13 year period so that’s a lot of ideas for comics!
I spent 2 weeks every summer with my family in Tuolumne Meadows (Yosemite) growing up. My siblings and I hiked and roamed that area so I’ve always felt pretty comfortable in nature. Drawing has always been fun and I took art and painting classes all through school. I think a lot of artistic people don’t have a good outlet as adults. I’m lucky to have found a way to continue being creative and combining it with my passion for the outdoors.
I really like the autonomy of backpacking. You have everything you need with you and you just go. It’s great for getting back into the present moment, simplifying life and paying attention to one’s environment. Also the people you meet are amazing.
My favorite thing is her confidence. Boots sees the humor in most everything, generally makes the best of where she’s at and as the Brits would say she’s a bit cheeky.
Most long distance hikers have a trail name so I wanted something short and memorable for the character. That’s where “Boots” came from and my roommate at the time suggested McFarland. It sounded good and the “far land” part sort of implied long vast distances which seemed to fit.
That’s actually partially the vision of the book. In the book there are some quotes from my PCT hiking journal and the cartoons that came out of those experiences. Needless to say 90% of the comics are based on real experiences, myself and occasionally my friends. Usually ideas come from the little things-bugs, blisters, dreaming of food, that sort of thing.
Hard to answer that. I’ll attach a few that had over 100,000 views on Facebook.
It’s a collection of some of the best comics created over the past 15 years. The early ones were black and white. Also mixed in are some quotes from my PCT journal that correspond to some of these cartoons, as I mentioned earlier.
I’ve really gotten into bikepacking these days. It’s very similar to backpacking but on a bicycle, you can go farther and see more with that precious 2 week vacation. I’m also fortunate to work for Tarptent.com so I feel pretty connected with a lot of hikers/campers and get to hear about some of their adventures.
If you’d like to see the “Weekly Boot” it goes up on Facebook and Instagram “Boots McFarland Cartoon” just about every week and I also have a website for more info www.bootsmcfarland.com.
The book is called "On the Trail with Boots McFarland-Volume 1" and it’s available on Amazon http://a.co/bZcb4a2.
